THE SLEEPER ARCHIVE

ARCHIVE 001 · CHAPTER 12

OSTROG

Graham goes looking for the man who has organised a revolution in his name.

The old man's explanation leaves Graham with one unavoidable conclusion: he must find Ostrog.

The city is still recovering from darkness when he begins moving toward the revolutionary headquarters.

Everywhere he hears rumours that the Council is collapsing.

Ostrog's name is cheered through the Ways.

Graham struggles through a city whose language has changed almost as much as its architecture.

Eventually he learns that Ostrog's headquarters are at the wind-vane offices in Westminster.

By the time Graham approaches them, electricity has returned.

The city explodes back into light.

Thousands of people crowd the revolutionary headquarters cheering Graham's name while the actual Graham tries to pass among them unnoticed.

He reaches the entrance only after repeated arguments with guards who refuse to believe his story.

Finally Graham claims only that he carries information Ostrog must hear personally.

A message is sent. This time the response is immediate. Graham is admitted.

He finally meets Ostrog.

The man is controlled and imposing, entirely unlike the confused Council officials Graham encountered after waking.

Ostrog knows exactly what has happened. He explains that the revolution has succeeded almost everywhere.

The Labour Companies have risen. Most of London belongs to the revolt. The aeronauts have been neutralised or brought over.

Only the Council House remains.

Ostrog then shows Graham the battle through a remote visual apparatus.

On its surface Graham sees the roof spaces, prisoners in red, destroyed buildings and the final white stronghold of the Council.

The rebellion Graham experienced as chaos is revealed from Ostrog's viewpoint as organised, planned and coordinated.

Graham finally understands why everyone speaks of Ostrog with fear and admiration.

ARCHIVE NOTE

Ostrog's power is competence. Graham has experienced only confusion since waking; Ostrog is the first person who appears to understand the entire machine at once.
