THE FIRST FALSE RECORD

The recording lasted forty-three seconds.

Graham stood in a room that had existed. His coat matched photographs from the first days after his awakening. The light fell correctly across his face. Even the hesitation in his speech resembled surviving broadcasts.

He told London that continuity mattered more than faction. He recognised Marian Vale as lawful successor. He asked the system guilds to obey the custodians.

Markets rose before Eliza Marr finished watching.

She knew it was false because of one word.

Graham referred to the Industrial Spine. The phrase had entered public usage after his death.

Eliza published the inconsistency. Within minutes, defenders of the recording produced an explanation: perhaps Graham had heard the phrase privately. Another copy appeared with metadata showing an earlier creation date. Then a third version appeared in which he did not use the phrase at all.

The problem was no longer proving that one record was false.

The problem was that records had become weapons capable of multiplying faster than verification.

Eliza opened the archive’s sealed authentication system to the public. Every verified image, transcript and document received a visible provenance chain. Anything altered after publication showed the break.

The custodians objected that uncontrolled access would reveal state secrets.

Eliza replied that secrecy had already produced two centuries of state ownership disguised as private trusteeship.

Then someone broke into the archive.

They did not steal Schedule Nine.

They photographed it.

By midnight, twelve competing copies were circulating. In six, the public-trust clause was intact. In four, it was missing. In two, the clause had been rewritten to grant emergency powers to the Heir.

Eliza sat among the servers and realised that preservation was no longer enough.

The archive would have to teach people how to distrust it.
