The black seal appeared first on a freight warrant.

Arun’s staff assumed it was a forgery until the central routing system accepted it.

The symbol belonged to a trustee emergency office abolished more than a century earlier. Yet the code behind it still existed in buried layers of the estate network, older than most current ministries and trusted by machines that had never been taught the office was dead.

Within a day, black-seal commands redirected fuel, opened two armories and attempted to seize an aerial communications station.

The custodians blamed radicals. Nara blamed the custodians. Marian’s advisers blamed Ostrog.

Nobody knew whether Ostrog was alive.

His name still carried enough force to organise fear. Some witnesses claimed he had escaped the final fighting. Others said he had died before Graham’s last flight. The archive contained no verified record of his body.

Eliza traced the seal to a dormant trustee key activated six hours after Graham’s death.

Arun traced the commands to three maintenance nodes inside the Industrial Spine.

Nara’s people found the men using one of them.

They wore no uniform. They carried old trustee insignia and new weapons.

Their leader surrendered only after the crowd blocked every exit. He refused to give his name, but he laughed when Nara asked whether Ostrog had sent him.

‘Ostrog understood something your Sleeper never did,’ he said. ‘Systems do not care who is loved. They care who holds the keys.’

The black-seal network issued another command while he was still speaking.

Across London, twelve locked rooms opened at once.
