THE HEIR REFUSES THE CROWN

Marian finally signed the inheritance papers in public.

The crowd in Organiser’s Square fell silent.

For weeks she had refused the title. Now she stood beside Eliza, Arun and Nara with the succession instrument open before her and wrote her full name beneath the clause recognising her as Graham’s lawful heir.

The custodians smiled too quickly.

Then Marian opened a second document.

By accepting the estate, she had acquired the legal standing required to execute Schedule Nine.

She transferred every asset indispensable to public provision out of the private estate.

Transport.

Power.

Water.

Food exchanges.

Communications.

Public land.

Administrative systems.

One by one, the ownership structure that had supported two centuries of government left her hands.

The custodians objected that no single heir could dismantle the constitutional basis of the state.

Marian answered that they had spent two weeks insisting a single heir could own it.

She kept the private remainder: houses, accounts, collections, land that served no public necessity. It was still an immense fortune.

Then she placed those assets into a transitional trust whose charter prohibited political control.

‘I was offered a crown made of contracts,’ she told the square. ‘I accept only long enough to put it down.’

The cheering lasted nine minutes.

Nara did not cheer.

Later she told Marian, ‘You understand this does not solve who governs.’

Marian nodded.

‘I know.’

‘Good.’

For the first time, they smiled at each other.
