AFTER THE SLEEPER

Months later, a child asked Eliza whether the Sleeper had really owned the world.

They were standing in a rebuilt archive hall whose walls displayed no portraits larger than the documents beneath them.

Eliza considered the question.

‘Legally?’ she said. ‘Almost.’

‘Did people believe it?’

‘Enough people did.’

‘Was he bad?’

Eliza looked across the hall at Graham’s surviving letters: the exhausted handwriting of a man who had never asked to become a system.

‘No,’ she said. ‘That was part of the problem.’

Marian Vale lived outside the government and was consulted by it constantly. Arun Vey returned to the Industrial Spine, where his distributed charter was already producing new arguments. Nara Venn won no office and somehow attended more meetings than anyone who had. Commander Rook remained commander because nobody had yet invented a safer way to replace him.

The black seal disappeared from public systems.

The second Graham never returned.

The UNKNOWN credential remained in isolated machines, stripped of authority but impossible to explain.

One evening Eliza received a package with no sender.

Inside was a map.

London occupied one corner.

Across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, other cities were marked with symbols from estate networks the trustees had once controlled indirectly.

Some were crossed out.

Some were circled.

One was labelled with the same word found beneath the Hall of the Atlas.

UNKNOWN.

On the reverse, someone had written a single sentence.

THE SLEEPER WAS NEVER THE ONLY ONE.

Eliza stood at the window while the Moving Ways carried the city beneath her.

Graham’s story had ended in the air.

The world after him had only begun.
