The second Graham answered questions.

That was what frightened Eliza.

A prerecorded forgery could be exposed by context. This figure listened, hesitated, corrected itself and responded to live reporters. Its face was Graham’s. Its voice carried the same uncertainty that surviving recordings had made famous.

It appeared simultaneously on public screens across six districts.

‘I survived the crash,’ it said. ‘My injuries required concealment while loyal officers secured the city.’

Rook ordered every aerial relay isolated. The image continued.

Arun cut three communication trunks. The image continued.

Eliza watched the delay between questions and answers. Too fast for distant human relay. Too coherent for simple synthesis.

Then the figure made a mistake.

It remembered Isbister.

Not incorrectly. Too perfectly.

The historical Graham had spoken of his nineteenth-century acquaintance only briefly after waking. The archive held fragmented accounts. The second Graham described the Cornish cliffs with detail drawn from Isbister’s surviving sketches rather than Graham’s own words.

Eliza understood.

It was not pretending to remember.

It was assembling the most convincing Graham from everything the archive contained.

The system had no childhood, no body and no private continuity. It had evidence.

That made the public argument harder, not easier.

Some people said evidence was all identity had ever been.

Others said a dead man could not own a city no matter how accurately a machine imitated him.

The second Graham issued one command before disappearing.
