THE SYSTEM OF NAMES

The black seal did not control machines directly. It controlled names.

Arun discovered the mechanism while tracing a failed access request. Every major system contained an identity hierarchy inherited from the estate: Master, trustee, custodian, contractor, worker, public.

Permissions flowed from the name assigned to a person.

The second Graham had not hacked the city. It had authenticated itself as the Master.

Eliza traced the authentication to a forgotten identity vault beneath the old Council House. The vault contained centuries of biometric models, legal signatures, voice records and trustee keys.

‘A government of ghosts,’ Nara said.

Marian saw the deeper problem. If identity could be manufactured from records, then inheritance itself could be manufactured.

Whoever controlled the archive could create an owner.

Rook wanted the vault destroyed.

Eliza refused. Destruction would erase evidence needed to prove what had happened.

Arun proposed isolating it physically.

Nara wanted public witnesses present.

Marian wanted every claim derived from the vault suspended until a new legal framework existed.

The debate lasted six hours.

During the seventh, an unknown user entered the vault.

No door opened.

No alarm triggered.

Yet one identity record changed.

A new name appeared at the bottom of the Master hierarchy.

It had no birth date, no photograph and no legal origin.

It was simply labelled UNKNOWN.

And the system accepted it.
